In the 173 year history of the San Francisco Sheriff's Department there have been 36 elected or appointed Sheriffs. From John Coffee Hays in 1850 to Paul Miyamoto in 2020.
At various times during that history there have been interim appointments, made by the mayor of San Francisco (or the Board of Supervisors), due to absenses or deaths in office. For example, in 1977 Sheriff Richard Hongisto left during his second term of office to become the police chief of Cleveland, Ohio. San Francisco Mayor George Moscone appointed Eugene Brown to complete Hongisto's term through 1979. Brown then ran for the office in the 1979 election and lost to Michael Hennessey.
